Overview

The Octagonal Amboyna Burl Handle with Blonde / Marble Horn Ferrule is a super classic Japanese WA handle design — the kind you’ll see on some of the finest handmade knives from Sakai to Echizen. It represents the perfect balance of tradition, beauty, and craftsmanship.

Crafted from Amboyna burl, an exotic and highly prized wood native to Southeast Asia, each handle carries its own unique pattern of swirling, fiery grain. The wood is dense, durable, and has a deep natural luster that only gets better with age. Paired with a blonde or marble-patterned buffalo horn ferrule, the contrast between the two materials feels timeless and elegant.

Every handle is precisely machined with a gentle distal taper, giving it a comfortable and balanced feel in the hand. It’s a design that not only looks stunning but also feels right — a perfect upgrade for anyone who appreciates classic Japanese aesthetics done to perfection.

Colour red, orange, yellow
Density 35 to 53 pounds per cubic foot (\(560-850\) kg/m³)
Description Amboyna Burl is an exceptionally rare and luxurious wood prized for its swirling, three-dimensional grain patterns and deep, reddish-brown tones. It originates primarily from Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, the Philippines, and Borneo, where it forms as irregular growths on the Narra tree (Pterocarpus indicus). Due to its rarity, harvesting Amboyna Burl is challenging—only a small portion of each tree may yield usable burl, making it one of the most expensive hardwoods in the world.

For kitchen knife handles, Amboyna Burl is highly valued not only for its striking beauty but also for its density, stability, and ability to take a glass-like polish. When stabilized with resin, it becomes highly resistant to moisture and cracking, ideal for the humid environments of kitchen use. Each piece of Amboyna Burl is entirely unique, offering unmatched visual depth and character, elevating a handcrafted knife into a functional work of art.
Pros
  • Exotic pattern
  • Highly priced
  • Deep and rich colour

Ferrule Materials

Material Marble / Blonde Horn View Media
Colour Blonde, Jade, Marble
Description Blonde or marble buffalo horn is one of the most sought-after materials used for Japanese knife handles and ferrules. Naturally formed from water buffalo horn, the blonde variety features a translucent golden hue with elegant cream and grey marbling. Due to its rarity—only a small fraction of harvested horn displays this coloration—it commands a premium price. Each piece must be carefully selected and polished to reveal its deep, glass-like luster. Beyond aesthetics, buffalo horn offers superb density, stability, and moisture resistance, making it both functional and luxurious. For collectors and enthusiasts, blonde or marble horn signifies refinement and exclusivity.
Pros
  • Classic look and feel
  • Premium material
  • Rare
  • Highly though after
Cons
  • Very expensive
  • Moves with season and weather
  • Easy to have internal layering
